John Fitzgerald Carson
arrived in Athens, Texas on Friday
as his 5th stop on his campaign trail to be elected Texas State
Representative for District 12.
The war veteran and
former Longhorn and Aggie spoke to the press and the
people of the town on their concerns of welfare, and the new state salt
tax. He also voiced his support of farmers across west Texas and spoke
personally with many of them, promising a repeal of the beef ban imposed
in many parts of
the state as a result of the discovery of variant Creutzfeld-Jakobs disease,
more commonly known as "mad cow" disease.
The visit has already
drawn strong reactions from Democrats,
Republicans, and Independents.
Ryan Chapman, chairman
of the Athens College
Democrats said Carter’s possible election could be
beneficial for the state of Texas.
"He left me feeling
really good about the way things in Texas
will turn out," Chapman said.
Strangely enough,
James Thompson, a Republican
farmer, states a similar opinion.
“John Carter
[hic] made some promises that, if kept,
would help us farmers out alot,” Thompson said.
